Set in a university in Japan, among beautiful, old Japanese temples, Psychic Detective Yakumo is a captivating story about an aloof college student, who keeps to himself and lives in the university cinema club room because he doesn’t want to be around others. He has a special gift he was born with, signified by a left red eye that he hides with a regular contact.
This gift is the ability to see and communicate with ghosts and spirits. He has a need to help these spirits find closure and be able to live in peace. His gifts are known throughout the city and the university and that is how he meets Haruka. She is desperate for help and despite the coldness Saitou shows towards her, she has no other option to help her with a friend who is possessed by spirits.
There are many murders going on around the university and city, and the city’s officials are ready to get Saitou on board to help them solve some of these. Saitou and Haruka team up together to start taking care of these mysteries and helping the police solve them.
Yakumo World the scenario
In Yakumo world, Yakumo Saitou is always aloof, always rude, but has an affinity for helping those who are having spirit troubles and is paid for his efforts. Haruka becomes a partner to Saitou and develops a crush on him that you would just love to see returned in the aloof Saitou. She is a little silly, but has a view of the world that is refreshing, trying to get Saitou to see that the world isn’t the horrible place he feels it is despite the things that she has seen and experienced in her life as well, such as the loss of her twin sister in childhood that she blames herself for.
The pair work with the city’s detective, Gotou who trusts in Saitou’s ability and has used him to help solve many of the city’s cases. The colorful cast of people that come through Saitou’s life all have different parts and purposes in their contact with him, and it’s interesting to learn of the twists that come up along the way.
The discoveries that are made about Yakumo’s past all come together to help you understand why he is the way he is. Each case that comes up is yet another piece to the puzzle of this aloof character’s life and you get drawn in time and time again as you watch it all play out.
In a city full of culture, beauty and mystery, you will find yourself lost as you go along with Yakumo and Haruka’s mystery solving, rooting them on and encouraging them to get together.
